"I didn't know I was being bullied and abused!"

When one of my most dedicated clients realized that the way she was raised in the reason behind her greatest fears and constant NEED to do everything right, she asked me to share her story.

She is an adult woman with children and after a series of circumstances, she found herself back in the childhood environment she once loved. There she was shocked to find the sadness and misery her siblings used to complain about. 

As she spent time there with her parents, the criticism began to flow as they did in her childhood, the way she cleaned wasn't good enough, the money she made (about $80,000 in a year) wasn't good enough, even her children were critiqued for not sleeping long enough and being too free, fearless, and outspoken. It reminded her of just how muted she was growing up.

With ongoing coaching and spiritual evolution with me, she was able to see it all as a safe observer rather than a victim. So as that familiar feeling of, "I better do what my parents say or they won't love me" crept over, her she used some techniques to banish those feelings. When the semi-silent treatment came from one parent, she admits that she began to work harder to please them, she figured it was the respectful thing to do...and I agreed (love and respect shouldn't be withheld from family), but then with each new attempt to do better and please them, she was called a liar and told that she didn't clean anything or make any efforts. ...ah yes, history is repeating itself she thought to herself, but this time she spoke up to defend herself. And that is when the familiar bellows and nerve racking yelling and belligerent bullying began from the other parent....again all too familiar. 

At the end of her recollection, she said to me, 

"I could never do enough to make them happy and now i know why, it's because that was never my job. Surprisingly, I feel happy and free. The Universe placed me here so that as I go forward in my life to earn untold riches and leave my mark on the world, I will also live in infinite spiritual health and wealth. I now have a heart free of fear. When I was listening to the yelling and looked into the eyes of an unhappy, tormented person, haunted by their own secrets and painful past, I felt the compassion and forgiveness that Thich Nhat Hanh speaks of in the book you asked me to read. Now, as an enlightened and empowered adult I feel compassion and forgiveness. I needed to be there. I needed to know that my fears were not mine. I needed to see that I was carrying the burdens that my parents couldn't cope with in their own lives. Even though they thought that fear was the best vessel on which to deliver their love, I swear I'm gonna release even the tiniest residue of their fear-based teachings and soak up every bit of their #love because it's like you always say, ' they did the best they could with what they thought they knew!'"
