Whatever you plan to give today (love in your home, focus at school, dedication at work, motivation and support for friends)...Give it to yourself first! Your cup must be full before you can pour from it, and it must contain that which you wish to share.
In other words, if you plan to pour love on other you must first posses love within yourself and for yourself before you can adequately share it.
I have met many mothers struggling with self esteem issues themselves, while expressing their exhaustion with trying to encourage their daughters. They are one of many prime examples of pouring from an empty cup. There is sincerely no doubt that these mothers love their children and intend to show love to their children ceaselessly! (They are actually quite phenomenal mothers, if I may add) The problem is that with their own resistance to filling themselves up in areas of self love, worth and positive expansion, they are failing in transmitting those essentials to their daughters.
This is not limited to mothers and daughters or families in general. The need to fill before you pour is a common sense in all arenas. Cars can't be filled by empty gas stations and water bottles cannot be filled from dried springs. Lemonade can't be poured from an empty jug and of course love can't flow from a heart filled with hate and fear.
Before trying to center another, center yourself. Before trying to teach another their worth, learn yours. Before motivating others, motivate yourself. And in the airplane, before putting on someone else's mask, secure your mask first! In that, you will "teach by the power of your example" (as Abraham Hicks would say)
.
Learn to appreciate the power of self...not for the purpose of flattering and inflating self in narcissism, but to serve, share, give and love the way we are truly meant to. This is the power of self...it is paramount...and precedes any positive change you wish to see!
